Growing up surrounded by music, Mike’s earliest influences came from a musical church that was home to a traveling Christian band, along with his uncle, Richard Caudle, whom many consider one of the greatest rock vocalists ever to come out of the area. Add in countless hours spent on long bus rides to and from school listening to 80s and 90s country music, and the foundation was laid for a voice that would eventually become the unmistakable sound of River Road.

Blessed with extraordinary vocal range, raw power, and an ability to move effortlessly between musical genres, Mike possesses the kind of voice that simply can’t be taught. Whether he’s belting out a powerful rock anthem, delivering a soulful blues number, or bringing a country ballad to life, his ability to captivate an audience is nothing short of remarkable.

Mike met guitarist Jesse Michaels in middle school, and the two began writing songs and making music together in 1997. What started as two young musicians sharing a passion for music eventually became River Road in 2002, launching a musical partnership and friendship that has spanned nearly three decades.

But as impressive as his voice may be, it’s Mike’s infectious personality, boundless energy, and genuine love for entertaining that truly set him apart. He’s not the kind of front man who simply stands behind a microphone and sings. He connects with the crowd, feeds off its energy, and makes every performance feel like an experience rather than just another show.

River Road Co-Founder Steve Michaels, affectionately known as “Old Man River,” has been picking guitar for over 50 years. His musical journey began at an early age, inspired by his Uncle Bill Trillingham, a well-known Lafayette-area musician renowned for his Chet Atkins-style, three-finger guitar picking.

At just 10 years old, Steve was introduced to guitar and bluegrass music by his neighbor, Bob Crane, a talented local Scruggs-style banjo picker. What began as a few informal lessons quickly became something much bigger. Steve returned to Bob day after day, eager to learn more, and it wasn’t long before his extraordinary natural ability became apparent. Bob recognized a young prodigy in the making and began taking Steve to bluegrass festivals, exposing him to the musicians and traditions that would shape his playing for decades to come.

By age 13, Steve found himself onstage at the legendary Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival, performing alongside none other than the Father of Bluegrass himself, Bill Monroe. That unforgettable experience became a defining moment in Steve’s musical life and helped ignite a passion for performing that has never faded.

Over the next five decades, Steve’s musical journey would take him across genres, stages, and state lines. His career has included playing in rock bands such as Sidewinder and Recycled White Trash, countless acoustic performances, and years of two-man shows alongside his son and fellow River Road bandmate, Jesse Michaels. Equally proud of his willingness to take a chance on himself, Steve walked away from a factory job at age 50 to pursue music full-time. What followed was a long and rewarding solo career that took him from Colorado to Michigan, entertaining audiences with his unmistakable guitar style, extensive song catalog, and love of performing.

Steve’s connection to the Wabash River runs as deep as his connection to music. Having grown up along its banks, he later made his cabin downstream a gathering place for family, friends, and fellow musicians. That cabin, and the river itself, have provided the backdrop and inspiration for countless memories and many of River Road’s original songs. It’s only fitting that Steve helped give River Road both its musical roots and much of its identity.

Despite a lifetime of musical accomplishments, Steve considers his 15-plus years performing with River Road to be the pinnacle of his career. Sharing the stage with his son Jesse, his “second son” Mike Caudle, and his fellow bandmates has meant more to him than any individual performance or professional milestone.

In 2021, Steve suffered a stroke that presented one of the greatest challenges of his life. But anyone who knows Steve knows that quitting has never been his style. With the same determination that fueled his musical journey as a young boy, Steve has fought his ass off to get back to doing what he loves. Today, he continues picking guitar and hosting weekly jams, proving that his passion for music is every bit as strong as it was more than 50 years ago.

Steve remains a crucial part of River Road’s heart, soul, and musical identity. His songwriting, suggestions, experience, and hard-earned wisdom continue to help shape the band’s music and direction. And with a personal catalog numbering in the hundreds of songs, River Road will continue drawing from Steve’s musical legacy for many years to come.
